Ensuring Ethical Business: Positioning Indonesia in ASEAN

On 17 December 2015, Indonesia Business Links (IBL) in collaboration with the ASEAN CSR Network (ACN), successfully conducted a workshop "Ensuring Ethical Business: Positioning Indonesia in ASEAN." This workshop was part of IBL's Action Forum for Responsible Business. The aim of the forum was for business leaders and other stakeholders to elevate partnership for development to real actions, especially in the areas of ethics and transparency, disaster preparedness and youth empowerment.

The workshop was attended by more than 20 confirmed participants from both the private and public sectors. Ms. Yanti Triwadiantini, the chairperson of ACN, gave the keynote speech.

Three other distinguished panelists were also present. They included Mr. Dadang Trisasongko, General Secretary of Transparency International Indonesia, Mrs. Elizabeth Goodbody, partner of PwC Indonesia, and Mr. Giri Suprapdiono, Director of Gratificationm KPK. The panel discussion was moederated by Mr. Ernest Alto, VP Risk Management and Compliance, Telkom-Telstra.

Some of the points brought up by the panelists included:

  • four main pillars to uphold anti-corruption practices. This includes participation, transparency, integrity, and accountability
  • the eradication of corrupt practices is crucial and will provide significant impacts to development and prosperity goals
  • corruption and bribery have put companies and organisaations in unhealthy competition in getting permits and licences in certain sectors
  • corruption and bribery impacts foreign investment in Indonesia
  • the changing players in corruption now including governors, mayors, parliamentary members and government officials
  • the imperative to improve law enforcement and learn from other countries such as Hong Kong and Singapore in combating corruption in the public and private sectors.

At the end of the workshop, IBL launched the first Indonesia Integrity Initiative online portal, which is supported by the Small Grant Funds from ACN and the Government of Sweden through its Embassy in Bangkok. The portal aims to promote ethical business in Indonesia and also as a resource centre for ethical business for companies. Through this portal, businesses can continue the dialogue among sectors, find solutions and actions to develop an ethical business environment.
